The easiest route to Tortola is to fly into one of the major Caribbean gateways and connect via a short regional flight — typically 30–45 minutes.

Tortola's main gateway airport (EIS) sits on Beef Island, linked to the main island by bridge. Be prepared for scenic but small aircraft on the final regional hop.

From Europe & the UK

Many direct transatlantic flights land in Antigua, St. Maarten, or Puerto Rico. From any of these, connecting onward to Tortola is straightforward and typically under an hour.

Ferries from St. Thomas

For guests flying into St. Thomas, USVI (STT), ferries are an excellent way to cross into the BVI. Taxis are available immediately outside the STT terminal.

The main St. Thomas town ferry terminal. Ferries depart regularly to Road Town, Tortola — journey time approximately 45 minutes to 1 hour.

Documentation

Entry Requirements

North America

U.S. and Canadian citizens require a valid passport to enter the British Virgin Islands. US citizens travelling by air to the Caribbean must present a passport or other WHTI-compliant documentation.

Europe

European citizens need a valid passport to enter the BVI. Residents of certain countries may also require a visa — check with the nearest British Embassy or BVI Tourist Board if in doubt.

From the Caribbean

Citizens from some Caribbean islands may need to obtain a visa to visit the BVI. Contact the Chief Immigration Officer or nearest BVI Tourist Board office to confirm your requirements.

Entry & Departure Taxes

Upon arrival you will be charged an Environmental and Tourism Levy of $10 per person. On departure, a departure tax of $20 per person applies.
